Seed-Stage Deep Tech

Investing in the substrate layer powering the $7 trillion convergence of AI, energy, and compute™.

Most venture capital concentrates at the application layer. We invest one layer deeper — in the foundational infrastructure that everything above it depends on.

The Substrate Imperative™

One layer deeper
than the market.

Our thesis rests on a single conviction: structural dependency creates enduring strategic leverage. The most durable advantages in technology have belonged to the foundational layers entire ecosystems are built upon.

Substrate-layer companies remove the bottlenecks that constrain AI, energy, and compute. Once the stack depends on them, they become the system — and every layer built above becomes a downstream beneficiary. We are a thesis fund, built for the long arc, not a trend fund.

Focus

The constraints
we invest against.

Much of the industry engineers around structural bottlenecks. We back the companies solving them.

01

AI & compute infrastructure

Memory, bandwidth, and efficiency limits now set the pace of AI — not ambition.

02

Energy & grid-enabling technology

Compute is becoming an energy problem. The grid was not built for what comes next.

03

Post-quantum cybersecurity

Today's encryption has an expiry date. The systems that replace it must be built now.

04

Data integrity & trust architecture

Decisions made by machines are only as sound as the data and provenance beneath them.

05

Physical AI, robotics & autonomy

Intelligence that acts in the world needs foundations that are reliable by design.

06

Spatial computing

New interfaces require new infrastructure underneath them to scale.

What We Offer

Capital, judgment,
and access.

Our product is capital — along with the judgment and relationships that come with it. We offer three things.

Abstract architectural detail

For Investors

A thesis-driven vehicle for focused exposure to the infrastructure layer of the technology stack — built for the long arc.

  • Exposure one layer beneath the application layer
  • Companies solving structural bottlenecks
  • Disciplined, relationship-driven underwriting
Abstract structural pattern

For Founders

Seed capital and hands-on partnership at the stage where infrastructure companies are hardest to fund and easiest to overlook.

  • Technology positioning & go-to-market strategy
  • Strategic partnerships and portfolio connections
  • 30 years of deep tech commercialization experience

Approach

Seed stage. Originated
through relationships.

We prioritize technical defensibility, enterprise validation, and capital-efficient scaling over speculative pre-commercial technology. Deals reach us through three channels.

We describe each company by the substrate challenge it addresses. We do not name companies or products, and we do not describe proprietary technology publicly.

Specifics are shared in conversation, with the right people, at the right time.

Timothy P. Washington

Timothy leads Axiom-Nexus Ventures and authored its thesis, The Substrate Imperative™. Before launching the fund, he founded Grit and Turtle Ventures, a venture studio supporting emerging technology companies from commercialization strategy through growth and exit preparation.

His experience spans five breakthrough technologies from seed to Series A, NIST-related initiatives, 800+ patent claims and IP assets, and quantum-resilient security architecture. He also spent two years at a private capital management group ($1.2B AUM) supporting deal sourcing, LP communications, and strategic partnerships. Fund I follows participation in the VC Lab 20th Cohort.

Questions

Frequently asked.

What is the substrate layer?

The foundational infrastructure beneath AI, energy, and compute — the layer that everything above it depends on, such as memory, power, security, and enterprise reasoning.

What stage do you invest in?

Seed. It is the stage where infrastructure companies are hardest to fund and easiest to overlook, and where a thesis-driven partner adds the most.

Why don't you name portfolio companies?

We describe our portfolio by the challenge each company addresses. Specifics are shared in conversation, with the right people, at the right time.

How can investors learn about the fund?

Qualified investors can request investor materials through the form below. Materials are shared privately or in person — never on public pages.

I'm a founder. How do I reach you?

If you are building at the substrate layer, contact us directly by email. Many of our best conversations begin through our venture studio or our writing.

Investor Materials

Qualified investors may request investor materials directly. Materials are shared privately or in person. Founders building at the substrate layer are welcome to reach out the same way.

Submitting a request does not constitute an offer to sell or a solicitation of an offer to buy any security. Fund materials are provided only to qualified investors.
